Secure, Simplify and Transform to a Cloud-Enabled Enterprise

Progressive companies are leveraging cloud, a powerful business enabler, to transform their business and make it more competitive. But cloud and mobility significantly impacts the current IT infrastructure - security, network traffic flow, applications, user experience and cost. As CIOs and CISOs embrace this transformation, they look for opportunities to exchange ideas with their peers who have gone through this journey.

At this session, Larry Biagini, a visionary IT and security leader, will share his experience of leading the massive network, security and datacenter application transformation that he managed across all business units of GE. Example topics will include:

  • How to transform your hub & spoke network into a cloud-enabled network
  • How to transform datacenter applications to a SaaS, AWS and Azure environment
  • New security paradigm for the new world of cloud

How Hybrid Cloud can be used for Risk Management and Digital Transformation

Digital Transformation is driving rapid adoption of public clouds to accommodate dynamic business development and operations. How do companies leverage assets created in different datacenters? How can executives manage the risk of an evolving and often transient vendor ecosystem? Knowing what do look for in a strategic advisor, how to create a hybrid cloud based on open standards, and best practices to adopt are critical and necessary to be prepared for future growth.

Key takeaways:

Red Hat can help CIO's get prepared for future growth and help solve IT challenges. Open source software has made way for many technological advances, including hybrid cloud computing, big data, social, mobile and containers. As the global leader in enterprise-class open source software solutions, Red Hat and its partners are well-positioned to help customers achieve operational excellence and continue to innovate so they can effectively compete as a digital enterprise.

Think Tank

IoT and IT/OT

M2M type technologies. In many cases these older industrial automation initiatives used proprietary communications protocols and dedicated sensors that interfaced with controllers that could manage communications between IT and OT platforms. Fast forward to an IoT world however and these sensors and controllers will need to natively speak IP, natively integrate to back-end enterprise systems beyond just simple controllers, systems such as ERP, BI and other core platforms. Navigating the complexity of process, data, security, and functionality implications has the potential to be a minefield for the unwitting IT executive that goes in without eyes wide open.

Takeaways:

  • IT/OT integration is a low-hanging fruit area for IoT adoption
  • Existing investments into older M2M IT/OT integrations however can erode any potential value
  • Before investing in IoT enabled IT/OT integration careful consideration must be made of the implications and whether value can be realized - does the investment justify the returns over what is already in place?

Artificial Intelligence & the Future of Work: Accelerating Insights in the New Cognitive Era

Leading companies are disrupting the status quo by leveraging technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning to create new business models that fuel growth. These same technologies are radically shifting the paradigm around both the employee and the client experience. CIOs have the power to uncover the insight that drives disruption and speeds transformation. Learn how leading IT organizations are maximizing the use of AI and ML technologies alongside industry partnerships and investments to accelerate innovation.

Key Takeaways:

  • Integrating AI and machine learning into key applications and systems can enable people throughout an organization to access and act on insights when and where it matters most.
  • While some say wider-applications of AI will mean the 'death of jobs,' we believe this wave of automation will enable a 'bionic' workforce -- elevating the work humans do and necessitating the upskilling of employees in the future of work.
  • AI will become in many instances the client, as well as a driver of outputs. How we design our technology road maps to meet the needs of these new consumers will be critical to a company's success in this new era.

Executive Visions

Facilitating Technology-Enabled Business Transformation

The role of the modern IT Executive is more complex than it has ever been before, not just because the technology landscape has become more complex, but also because increasingly IT execs have had to become a business-focused executive, not just a technologist. Long have we talked about the CIO and CISO getting a seat at the table but modern businesses are now demanding that their technology impresario join them and leverage his deep and rich technical acumen to allow the organization as a whole to better position itself for market-place success. To be successful, CxOs need to invest in themselves, in their personnel, and in the right technologies to allow them to position the IT department to proactively address business needs as an innovator and driver, rather than order-taker and enabler.

Takeaways:

  • IT leadership can no longer be simply technology focused, but must instead take their visibility into business process and become business focused
  • A broader business-focus does not preclude maintaining technology excellence however and indeed may demand more of it than ever before
  • Success for CxOs will be measured not in how they can enable enterprise decisions, but in how they can drive growth

What Did Your Data Do Last Night?

It's almost paradoxical that enterprises possessing incredible stores of unique data are often not prepared to take advantage of those valuable assets - resulting in negative or reduced ROI from the data, incorrect or biased decision making, risk of potential compliance or security violations, and lost opportunities to gain competitive advantage. We will share an approach to data that services the needs of the entire enterprise, enabling a truly data-driven culture that is based on three core principles:

  • Hybrid data management - provide all data-driven professionals the ability to easily collect, transform and store all the data assets in the enterprise.
  • Unified governance - allow self-service access to trusteddata for better and faster insights while maintaining the necessary controls.
  • Smarter data science and analytics - make it easy for everyone from analysts to data scientists to collaborate to discover and develop insights using all of the raw data sources across the enterprise with the tools and technologies they prefer.

Join us to find out how to put all your data to work by applying a unified governance approach, adopting a fast path to data science, and laying a cloud foundation to accelerate your journey to becoming an AI data-driven business.

The Need to Go Micro and Integrate Existing Systems Into New Apps

Despite millions of dollars of investments and countless hours of implementation and support, employees are not using the enterprise software provided by their employers to do their jobs. Why? Because today's systems are hard to use, they trap data in silos, and have a poor user experience with limited mobile support. What's needed is a new way of delivering information and tasks to employees so they can work faster, make better decisions, and be more productive. In this session, Sapho CTO Peter Yared will talk about his experience with this exact problem when he was a CIO, which lead him to start Sapho. He will also invite Steve Comstock, CIO of CBS Interactive to join him in a discussion around:

  • How to modernize existing systems using microservices, that enable efficient, simple, and user-friendly workflows.
  • The importance of delivering content to where people are- any device, any messenger, any intranet- instead of focusing solely on mobile.
  • How to apply lessons learned from social media- push notifications, personalized information, and mobile access- to enterprise software to make it usable again.
  • How CBS Interactive underwent a digital transformation to improve employee satisfaction and productivity by modernizing their application environment.

Architecting Secure Systems - A Design-Led Life Cycle approach

Executives are currently facing a difficult challenge in terms of designing and maintaining robust and secure systems. The challenges come not just from technology but from people and process. Designing for secure systems means binding different generational thinking into a single consistent approach. These differences if not managed  holistically lead to lack of understanding and conflict in a lot of cases, conflict that leaders must learn how to overcome. This is achieved by instilling a more rigorous process oriented approach to design.

Takeaways:

  • Designing for Secure Systems involves tight coupling of people that are from different generations and have had different life experiences which has given them different outlooks
  • Each group has specific and unique strengths that can and should be brought to bear to improve the enterprise
  • Establishing a variety of frameworks (technical and managerial) enable groups to bind together into a cohesive unit

The Future of the CIO in the Coming Digital Economy

As more businesses undergo a digital transformation, and as those digital transformations become more ingrained into organizational culture, "Digital" becomes not something unique and different from the business, but a core component of every aspect of the business. As this shift occurs, IT itself faces the very real possibility of no longer being something unique from the business, but instead a component of every aspect of the business. In this world, what role then exists for the CIO? Two clear paths are presenting themselves - one leads to a focus on infrastructure and integration, to keeping the lights on for the digital innovators, while the other leads to information and innovation itself. Knowing which path to choose, how to choose it, and how to see it through will be one of the greatest challenges CIOs of this era will face.

Takeaways:

  • Change is, if not already here, certainly coming and CIOs who don't prepare for the change may not like the results when it arrives
  • Digital transformation is all about connecting enterprise systems to information technology to drive productivity and performance improvements
  • Be prepared to tackle the tasks that no-one wants to do, but everyone needs done; establish relevance to cultivate importance

Using Data & Analytics to Drive Business Transformation

Data science driven initiatives have become a reality for almost every company today; however, many initiatives fall short of expectations. Organizations looking to deliver transformational data science driven initiatives must treat data science differently than software development. With that, time tested initiative management principles such as defining the problem, starting simple and iterating, and rough up-front estimation still apply. For maximum impact, data scientists, business leaders, IT leadership each play a distinct role. This panel discussion will focus on how to use data and analytics to drive business success and discuss some real examples of how to make a difference.

Takeaways:

  • Organizations who are able to ship and consistently improve while reducing time to iteration will win.
  • For exceptional results, organizations need to balance rapid prototype and sprint methodologies with data science's research focus.
  • Time honored practices, such as effective initiative prioritization and starting with the problem first, still apply.
  • Transformational data science projects require long term buy-in and commitment across the enterprise.

Next Generation Third-Party Security Management

Your company's security posture is not strictly determined by your company's security program. Because today's information networks are a patchwork of systems and information shared, exchanged, and acquired from vendors, partners, and M&As, no company is an island. Your company's security posture is a product of the security programs of all the companies in an information ecosystem. Complicating this security environment is the fact that vendor security management processes are all but broken. Effective, comprehensive due diligence efforts haven't caught up with the speed of business today. Long-form questionnaires burden vendors and clients alike and often produce incomplete, inaccurate, or irrelevant information on which decisionmakers are expected to rely. All the while, regulators are requiring more frequent monitoring and deeper reviews of service providersâ?"as well as their service providers. Information security attacks are increasingly sophisticated. Breaches are more frequent. And no matter the risk climate, business needs to accelerate to remain competitive. It's time for a rationalized approach that leverages core expertise, automation, and machine learning to yield both rapid and accurate information necessary to effectively assess and manage vendor security risk.

Big Data Analytics and the Impact on Fraud

Financial fraud is, unfortunately a huge business, with annual losses so massive that were Fraud a country, it would have the fifth highest global GDP. While enterprises in the financial services sector have always used analytical processes to detect and limit those losses, as technology moves forward the analytical capabilities that can be brought to bear increase in exponentially in capability and those on the leading edge are able to see, and stop, more fraud in less time. Just as Big Data capabilities are bringing significant business benefit to other aspects of the business, they can to fraud mitigation but several challenges need to be overcome for maximum efficiency. Only by addressing quality, volume, security, and integration challenges and by further ensuring the right staff with the right skills are in place can benefits actually be realized.

Takeaways:

  • The increased use of unmanned technology combined with ever quicker financial transaction processing has created a world ripe for the proliferation of fraud
  • In a fight fire with fire approach, those same machine learning approaches can be repurposed to analyze transactions looking for the needle in the needlestack that is the illicit one
  • A Big Data approach only works with the right foundation; garbage in garbage out has never been more true and data and process rigor is essential to success

Get Greater Speed, Agility, and Value Through Cloud-Based Smart Manufacturing

Over the last 20 years enterprises and CIOs have focused significant resources and funding towards ERP deployments. While the ERP journey has often been challenging, it is clear today, if not obvious, that every enterprise of any scale requires an integrated system to manage its core business functions. For manufacturers, a common and comprehensive operating model has remained elusive, until now. Beyond the traditional manufacturing and quality requirements, the need for speed and agility to meet faster product cycle times, customer demand changes as well as the pressure of competition and continuous improvement means that the manufacturing operating system must meet the highest standards of integration, flexibility, and time to value. In short, what is required is a future ready solution. The rapid development of technologies across a wide range of disciplines has coalesced into Industry 4.0. While the vision of Industry 4.0 is still largely aspirational, one example is the use of big data tools to realize value from structured and unstructured data that are efficiently absorbed through traditional integration of IIoT. In this session, Patel will discuss how Sanmina implemented a cloud manufacturing solution to meet its demands of operations excellence and deep functionality within and across plant operations while maintaining a high level of agility and cost efficiency, quickly enable process controls, and provide data collection and visibility at specific work centers across a whole plant or even product lines that cross multiple plants.

Takeaways:

  • How a cloud based model provides greater speed and agility
  • Delivering business value through a common platform and data model
  • A future ready operations management foundation provides a competitive advantage
  • Start small and expand based on business needs

Cloud Robotics and Automation - Is It a New Paradigm to Digital Transformation

Robots and automation systems are no longer limited by onboard resources in computation, memory, or software. "Cloud Robotics and Automation" is where robots and automation systems share data and code and perform computation via networks building on emerging research in cloud computing. Teleoperation and cloud technologies will cause mass consumerization of robotics over the next five years. Between 2017 and 2022, Cloud Robotics will facilitate a major shift of manufacturing into cloud infrastructure The combined Cloud Robotics market will reach $18.2 billion by 2022 .

 Takeaways:

  • We will have a look at how this innovative area will be affecting organizations in the near future.
  • How the emergence of RaaS can help organizations integrate robots and embedded devices into the cloud.
  • Contrasting the potential advantages and negatives ( related to security, privacy, and quality of service for instance).
  •  Look at the new class of obviously intelligent apps such as VPAs you would need.
